Learning objectives

Students will be able to add enzymes to substrates and observe the effect on concentrations of enzymes, substrates, and products. Students will then be able to predict the effect of adding enzymes to solutions of substrates.

Real world application

Chemists can heat solutions to speed up reactions. However, extra heat could damage cells. In living things, enzymes allow reactions to occur faster at the same temperature. Without these enzymes, reactions would be too slow for complex life forms to function.

The containers labeled A, B, and C contain the same substrate. Use the Play button to observe the conversion of substrate to product. Once the Play button is pressed, you can use the droppers to add different amounts of enzyme. Toggle between graphs to observe the effects. Use the Reset button to try a new experiment.
