Learning objectives

This lab will allow you to investigate and compare the degrees of dissociation for strong and weak acids and bases.

Real world application

The degree of dissociation of acids and bases determines their strengths. The strength of an acid or base helps determine what it can be used for in everyday life. The strength of hydrochloric acid makes it ideal for breaking down food in the stomach, the strength of vinegar makes it ideal for preserving foods and giving them a sour flavor without damaging body tissue, the strength of sodium hydroxide makes it ideal for clearing clogged drains, and the strength of ammonia makes it ideal for cleaning household surfaces.
